bookmarks on left

In R8, you have bookmarks on the left. You can bookmark mail and calendar individually. (Both should be there defaultly from install.) You could also use a welcome page instead of the workspace. You'll find instructions for both of these in the User Help.

Workspace icons are for databases. Databases (not the icons, but the dbs) can be set (as you learned) to open to a default view. But since mail and calendar are both in the maildb, you can't set it up to open to two different places.
